About Hackensack, New Jersey
Hackensack’s name pays tribute to the “Sagamore of Hacquinsacq,” Chief Oratam of the Lenni Lenape, born in 1577. He granted land to early settlers in 1664.
The town was initially established as a Dutch trading post in 1639, later being settled by French Huguenots and, in 1688, by the British. At that time, it was known as the township of New Barbadoes. In 1921, Hackensack officially adopted its current name through a referendum vote, receiving its city charter.
During the American Revolution, Hackensack was a strategic location. The village, centered around The Green, served as a base for Washington’s troops in November 1776, as he surveyed local roads and bridges. On November 20, 1776, Washington led his army into Hackensack, where they camped on The Green. It was here that he made the critical decision to continue retreating from the advancing British and Hessian forces, setting the stage for the first major American victory at the Battle of Trenton the following month.
Hackensack serves as the county seat of Bergen County in northeastern New Jersey. Covering 4.6 square miles, the town sits at elevations ranging from three to 120 feet above sea level. From several vantage points, the New York City skyline, located seven miles to the east, is visible.
Bergen County was originally inhabited by the Achkinheshcky tribe, from which the name “Hackensack” is derived. The name itself means “mouth of a river.” The Hackensack people lived in villages, each functioning as an independent unit with its own government, practicing a form of democracy in which all members participated in decision-making.
Hackensack is a vibrant city in Bergen County, New Jersey, situated just 12 miles from New York City and easily accessible via the George Washington Bridge. With a population exceeding 45.736, Hackensack serves as a key center for both business and government. This high concentration of people and activity makes the city a focal point for arrests and traffic violations.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hackensack, NJ Criminal Defense.
FAQ: What is a search warrant and why is it issued?
A search warrant is a legal document that is signed by a judge. A search warrant gives the police permission to conduct a search in a specific place for specific items. In order to obtain a search warrant, the police must establish probable cause based on their own observations or based on information received from a reliable informant. In most cases, if the police conduct a search without a warrant, the search is presumed to be unreasonable. The police search generally cannot extend beyond the scope of the search warrant with regard to either the locations searched, or the items for which the police are searching.
FAQ: What is a motion to suppress?
A “motion to suppress” occurs when the defendant asks the judge to exclude certain evidence from being considered at the time of trial. A motion to suppress is a pre-trial motion. Sometimes, when the motion to suppress is successful, a trial can be avoided altogether if the prosecution is unable to prove its case without the aforementioned evidence.
