Frequently Asked Questions About Criminal Defense In Fair Lawn, NJ.

FAQ: What Should I Do If I Think I’m Going To Be Charged With A Crime Or Arrested?

The first step you should take is to contact a criminal defense lawyer. It’s crucial to find someone who has extensive experience handling criminal cases from start to finish. Even if you have a friend who’s a lawyer, it’s best to go with someone who specializes in criminal law, as their expertise will be vital in navigating the legal process. The decisions you make early on can have a significant impact on how your case unfolds.

If you’re arrested before you’ve had a chance to speak with an attorney, it’s important to stay calm and cooperate with the police during the arrest. However, you should clearly ask to speak with your lawyer before answering any questions. Resisting the arrest or trying to talk your way out of it won’t help your situation and could make things worse. Keep in mind that your best move is to remain silent until you’ve had legal advice.

FAQ: What Should I Do If There Is An Arrest Warrant For Me?

If you have a pending charge or are about to be charged with a crime, a lawyer might suggest that you voluntarily turn yourself in to avoid the humiliation of being arrested in a public setting. Nobody wants to be handcuffed at work or arrested in front of their family at dinner. If charges are being filed or are about to be filed against you, it’s smart to consult with an attorney about the option of surrendering yourself voluntarily.
