Nutley was originally established as Franklin Township in 1874, from portions of Belleville Township. It was incorporated as a town in 1902.

In its 2008 list of the “Best Places To Live” in New Jersey, New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Nutley in the 38th place. Its parks are considered the “crown jewel” of the Essex County park systems.

It covers 3.4 square miles, inhabited by 28,370 people as of the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, there were more than 7,300 families and some 11,000 housing units. City-data estimated the median house or condo value in 2009 at $397,350. The January 2011 cost of living index was 18.8% higher than the national average.

Between the 1920s and 1960s, there was a significant arrival of Italian immigrants and Italian-Americans. As per the 2010 census, almost half the residents identified their origins as Italian.
